Artist - Bill Roach Description - A wood carving, painted and signed. Whales are either baleen or toothed. Baleen whales have a filtering system (baleen plates) built into their lower jaw area. They swim at low speeds filtering out food from the water. Toothed whales generally swallow their food whole, only using their teeth to tear off pieces of larger prey. We don't see any teeth on this specimen so it must be a spotted green baleen whale.
